Legal Text

The definition of AI system should be based on the key functional characteristics of such systems, in particular the ability to infer, with a varying degree of autonomy, how to generate outputs such as predictions, content, recommendations or decisions that influence real or virtual environments. AI systems can be designed to operate with varying levels of autonomy and be used stand-alone or as a component of a product. The definition should be clearly distinguished from simpler traditional software systems or programming approaches, to ensure it is technology-neutral and future-proof.
Recitals are the preamble paragraphs of the EU AI Act. They explain the intent behind provisions but are not directly binding.
